The Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF), Soccer United Marketing (SUM) and the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers today announced that World Cup-bound Iceland has been selected as Mexico’s rival for the previously-announced U.S. Tour match at Santa Clara’s Levi’s® Stadium on Friday, March 23. In addition, it was announced that Nissan has been named presenting sponsor for the event.
With the game taking place during the FIFA fixture window, both squads are expected to travel with their top rosters.
Tickets for the Mexico U.S. Tour matches are available via MexTour.org, ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Mexico will kick off the Tour on January 31 in San Antonio where they face Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The Mexican National Team has faced Iceland, currently 22nd in the FIFA rankings, on three different occasions, winning one match and drawing two. The first time they met was 2003 in Phoenix, in a game that ended as a 0-0 draw. The second encounter took place in 2010 in Charlotte and it also resulted in a 0-0 draw. The last time these two teams faced each other was last year in Las Vegas in front of a record-breaking audience for soccer in the city, with Mexico winning 1-0.
